Benefits of an Office Water Dispenser

Workplace wellbeing has been a hot topic for a number of years now. After all, why wouldn’t you want your team members to be happy, healthy and productive at work? One cost-effective and easy way to improve the well-being of your workforce is through the provision of an office water cooler. Below are just a few of the reasons why an office water dispenser is a wise investment for your business.

Improves Overall Health

Good hydration is fantastic for overall health and wellbeing. Consuming your recommended daily amount of 6 - 8 glasses (approx. 2 litres) of water per day can help to boost your immune system, turbocharge your metabolism, protect your joints and give your skin a healthy glow.

A 2018 study even found that adults that drank more water had a lower risk of experiencing feelings of anxiety or depression, suggesting good hydration is just as important for our mental wellbeing, as well as our physical health.

Furthermore, having a water dispenser in the office also encourages your team to take small breaks throughout the day, with walking to and from the water cooler allowing workers to stretch their legs and get in a few of those all-important daily steps.

Boosts Concentration & Productivity

Two of the biggest contributors to poor concentration and productivity are dehydration and a lack of sleep. Incidentally, being dehydrated can also disrupt sleep!

Research suggests that even slight dehydration of around 2% can impact your mood, increase fatigue and reduce brain function. This is because when the body is dehydrated the heart rate and body temperature increase, which causes discomfort and a reduction in mental ability.

By promoting good hydration in your workplace with a free to use office water cooler, you’ll be revitalising your workforce, improving their overall health and your business profitability.

Saves Time & Money

We’ve already mentioned how important good hydration is for concentration and productivity, but if you’re up against a deadline then you don’t have time to wait for the kettle to boil. With a hot and cold water dispenser for the office, you can dispense boiling water instantly, straight into your cup for a much-needed tea or coffee, meaning you’re back to your desk in no time.

An office water dispenser will also help your team save money as there will be no need to purchase bottled water or other soft drinks to keep them hydrated throughout the day.

Reduce Plastic Waste

Opting for a plumbed in-office water cooler, that filters and chills water from the mains, is not only a very economical way of providing your team with fresh drinking water, it is also fantastic for the environment.

In the UK we use 7.7 billion plastic bottles every year, which is an average of 117 bottles per person. Whilst many plastic bottles are recycled, a staggering amount ends up in our oceans, which is thought to kill around 1 billion sea creatures every year.

By eliminating the need for single-use bottles in your business by installing a mains fed office water cooler you’ll be helping to reduce plastic pollution, and also making your business more sustainable, an attractive addition for many modern job seekers.

Types of Office Water Cooler

There are many different factors to take into consideration when shopping for an office water dispenser so it’s helpful to have an understanding of the three main types of machine - bottle fed coolers, plumbed-in water dispensers and instant hot/cold water taps. Below we outline the main differences between each type of machine and its suitability in different office environments.

Bottle Fed Office Water Coolers

Bottled water coolers offer a cost-effective and easy to use water solution that’s ideal when a mains water supply is not available. This is especially useful in small boutique offices where there is no kitchen or plumbing, or in large offices where you may wish to provide your team members with a refreshing supply of water within close proximity to their desks.

Plumbed In Water Dispensers

The most popular choice for workplaces is a plumbed in office water dispenser that provides your team with a constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water.

Available in desktop and freestanding models, plumbed in dispensers are great value and great for the environment as you aren’t required to purchase bottled refills.

Mains fed office water dispensers are available with a variety of drinking options including boiling, chilled and ambient. Some even include a CO2 canister for sparkling water.

Plumbed water coolers don’t need to be ugly either, with modern sophisticated models from the likes of Borg & Overström, or you may wish to consider an instant water tap as detailed below.

Boiling & Chilled Office Water Taps

A stylish but functional option, boiling and chilled water taps from manufacturers such as Billi and Zip have seen a huge increase in popularity over the last decade. With the appearance of a modern tap and a compact undercounter system, these innovative water solutions fit seamlessly into any modern office kitchen or break room. They also offer ultimate variety with boiling, chilled and even sparkling officer water taps available.

Water options

Consider the types of water options you’d like to offer your workforce. Chilled drinking water is generally a given, but you may also wish to offer boiling water for hot drinks and even sparkling water. Some people also don’t enjoy chilled water and may prefer an ambient alternative.

Capacity

A very important consideration when choosing an office water cooler is the capacity required. There’s no point in choosing a low volume solution if you’ve got 100 people in the office. Not only will they become frustrated having to wait around for boiling or chilled water, but the machine will also be more likely to fail or break down from overuse.

Maintenance

Whilst office water coolers are generally fairly low-maintenance you’ll still want to think about daily cleaning, annual servicing and regular filter changes.

Touch-free operation

In light of the pandemic, touchless water machines have become ever more popular as they reduce a common touchpoint within the office. There are many different models available including versions that use a foot pump, can be operated via your smartphone or by waving your hand across a sensor.

Officer Water Cooler FAQs

How much is a water cooler for an office?

Bottled water coolers are extremely economical and start from as little as £1.50 per week on a 3-5 year lease. Though bear in mind you will need to purchase bottled water refills, which start at around £7 per bottle depending on the size (11 litres or 19 litres) and the type of water (spring, mineral or botted). The number of bottles you’ll get through really depends on your staff numbers.

Plumbed in water coolers for the office are only slightly more expensive, starting from £2.00 per week on a 3-5 year lease, though you don’t have to pay for bottled refills.

Hot and cold water dispenser taps for the office are the most premium option starting from £6 per week on a 3-5 year lease.

Do office water coolers have filters?

Yes - plumbed in water dispensers and instant water drinking taps generally feature a filter that removes any impurities to create the purest, most refreshing glass of water. Bottle-fed office water coolers don’t tend to feature a filter though, as bottled water is either manually or mechanically filtered.

Should you turn off the water cooler at night?

Many modern office water dispensers feature energy-saving technology whereby they go into standby mode when out of use for long periods of time, such as at night, preserving energy and saving money.

Do office water dispensers need to be cleaned?

Yes - just like any other kitchen appliance, dirt and bacteria can build up in your office water cooler. Cleaning is essential to ensure a safe and hygienic workplace, and will also keep your water tasting it's very best. We recommend cleaning all the surfaces of your machine daily, as well as emptying and rinsing any drop trays, then taking the machine apart for a full sanitisation once a quarter.
