Improving the Garden Centre Café Experience

Perrywood Garden Centre has long been recognised for offering quality coffee as part of its in-store café experience. As the business continued to grow, including the development of a new site in Sudbury, the team identified an opportunity to further enhance their refreshment offering and ensure it consistently reflected the evolving brand.

With a strong focus on customer experience, Perrywood wanted to create a café environment that encouraged visitors to spend more time on-site. However, while the foundations were in place, variations in drink quality, service speed, and team confidence highlighted the need for a more structured, scalable approach.

By refining both their equipment and training strategy, the goal was to deliver a coffee experience that was not only high quality, but also efficient, consistent and aligned with the expectations of a busy garden centre café.

Choosing the Right Setup for All Sites

To support Perrywood’s vision of delivering a premium, café-style experience, Liquidline recommended a traditional espresso setup as the preferred solution.

At the Sudbury site, this included the La Spaziale S5 2 Group espresso machine, paired with Anfim Luna and Hey Buddy grinders to ensure precise, consistent grinding throughout the day. To further enhance workflow and consistency, PUQ Press M2 automated tampers were introduced, removing the need for manual tamping and supporting a more streamlined coffee-making process.

A Marco undercounter boiler system was also installed to provide reliable hot water for tea and other beverages, ensuring the entire drinks offering could be delivered efficiently during peak trading periods.

Alongside the equipment, Perrywood selected Café Bonté Italia and decaf coffee beans, ensuring a consistently high-quality flavour profile across their drinks menu.

This combination of equipment and consumables allows Perrywood to produce high-quality, barista-made drinks while maintaining the speed and consistency required in a busy garden centre café environment.

Offering Training & Ongoing Support

Alongside the equipment upgrade, a key focus of the project was developing team capability and confidence.

We delivered a comprehensive barista training programme for staff across all sites at our Ipswich coffee academy. Led by Liquidline’s coffee experts, the training covered both the practical skills required to produce excellent coffee and the underlying principles of coffee preparation, helping teams understand the “why” behind each step.

To maintain these standards over time, Perrywood benefits from regular audits and ongoing support, ensuring consistency is upheld across all locations. Team members also return for refresher training, while their internal coffee team have developed their expertise further through advanced training, helping to embed best practices within the business.

This combination of training, auditing and hands-on support ensures that high standards are not only achieved, but sustained.

Delivering Consistency, Efficiency & Growth

Since partnering with Liquidline, Perrywood has seen a significant improvement in coffee quality, consistency and operational efficiency across its cafés.

The enhanced training and optimised workflows have enabled teams to deliver drinks more quickly without compromising on quality, improving the overall customer experience during busy periods. At the same time, a deeper understanding of coffee preparation has helped reduce waste and improve yield, supporting better cost control across the business.

The result is a refreshment offering that not only complements the garden centre environment but also encourages customers to stay longer, contributing to a more enjoyable visit and supporting increased dwell time.
