As the Senior Credit Controller, you will be responsible for managing your own ledger, driving down overdue debt and supporting monthly cash collection targets. Working closely with the sales ledger, sales and contract coordination teams, you’ll build strong relationships, resolve payment queries efficiently, and ensure customers receive exceptional service. You’ll also carry out thorough credit checks, monitor risk, and support debt recovery where needed. The Role – Senior Credit Controller
- Proactively chase overdue invoices by phone, email, and letter to ensure timely payment and maximise monthly cash collection.
- Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date notes within the ERP system, documenting all debt‑chasing activity and customer interactions.
- Investigate and resolve debit balances on major accounts, including unallocated cash, in collaboration with the sales ledger team, and arrange refunds where required.
- Monitor accounts on stop, ensuring orders are released promptly once funds are received.
- Review and manage customer credit limits, escalating concerns to senior management when necessary.
- Conduct and support credit checks for new and existing contracts as part of the onboarding process.
- Reconcile customer accounts and work with internal teams to ensure billing records and financial data are accurate.
- Respond quickly and professionally to customer queries, issuing statements and copy invoices as needed.
- Create and manage customer disputes within the system, ensuring swift referral and resolution.
- Oversee the chase‑letter process, ensuring timely actions through each stage of escalation.
- Identify and escalate potential risks of non‑payment or bad debt, supporting month‑end reporting and decision‑making.
- Manage the legal debt recovery process from referral through to final outcome, and maintain logs of customers in liquidation or administration.
What You Will Need in the role of Senior Credit Controller
- Proven experience in a credit control role, with experience of credit control processes and debt collection.
- A clear understanding of underwriting to complete a full credit check of clients to enable a suitable credit facility/proforma account.
- Knowledge of the customer order to cash process from start to finish across the business and how the finance team and other departments impact this.
- Knowledge of credit risk and risk appetite for the business.
- Good customer service and knowledge of the part the team plays in delivering customer satisfaction.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to manage a heavy workload.
- Strong relationship building skills, being mindful of commercial aspects and impacts on people with the ability to explain situations and processes to non-finance managers.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to investigate and resolve issues.
- Ability to work as a team
- Proficiency in IT with a good understanding of MS Office products (Outlook, Excel, Word) and ERP systems.
